Case: Disciplining Students
One of my biggest weaknesses is confrontation. My whole life I've struggled with being a confrontational person, and I Worry that once I begin teaching I will still struggle with this in the classroom. I know how easy it is to lose control over a classroom, and the importance of disciplining students and correcting misbehavior before it spreads. But if anyone else has struggled with confrontation like I do, what measures should I take to become comfortable with confrontation?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Classroom management does heavily rely on confrontation with students, however confrontation does not need to be negative.
Initially, I would start the school year by setting and discussing the high expectations I have for students. Students will learn best in an environment that is structured.
Repeat/reinforce your expectations continuously for the first few weeks of the school year as students become accustomed to their new classroom.
Don’t let up! Be stern with your rules but do not appear “bossy” or like a dictator. This will not allow you to create positive relationships with your students.
Treat them with respect and like adults; there is no need to baby them. |

Comments: I agree. Confrontation doesn't always have to be negative. Additionally, discipline and confrontation are not the same. The correct discipline should be established at the beginning of the school year. Confrontation arises after that when students are not behaving in the expected manner. |

Comments: I like this solution. if you have clear rules right out of the gate at the beginning of the year you are less likely to see the bad behavior. Also, like you said, try not to be "bossy" but rather just gently reminding them of the rules. |
