Case: What would you do if half of your class did poorly on a test?
If you are asked this question in a job interview for a teaching position: What are some things you should avoid when responding to this question? What might be some important points to stress that would get the interviewer's attention? How would you respond to this question?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
If half of an entire class did poorly on a test, there is obviously something that I did not explain sufficiently. Without making it too obvious about who performed well, I would ask questions to the class and call on a couple of the students who did do well on those specific questions. They may be able to summarize the ideas or state them in a way that I had not considered, that will make more sense to the other students. Being the teacher, you sometimes find that things need to be explained that you were not anticipating since you have the knowledge already and write the tests.

Comments: This is not the proper solution to this case. This would be the teacher's responsibility situation and would need to be reflected on by the teacher.

Comments: I am not sure if any blame needs to be placed here but determining how to teach and explain a concept by "asking" the students who did well on the test is not the solution.

Comments: I still think that the students need another chance. If half of the class did poorly, that tells you that they were not prepared enough. There should be an alternative assignment of some sort to replace said test.

Comments: I feel that this should not be up tot he students. As the teacher, if most of my class did poorly I would find an alternative way of teaching it and re-teach the material.

Comments: I do not think it is fair to call on those who did well on the test to explain how they got a certain answer on the test right. It is important to go back and look at the tests to see if it was one aspect or the whole lesson. If it was a certain aspect it is important to go back and teach it over again so the students can clearly understand it. As a teacher you should be prepare to go over the test or at least a certain area of the test no matter if you have the knowledge already and wrote the test, you are not the one who had to take it. I would look at the scores and talk to the students about the test.
