Case: Parent Facebook Friend?
After you return from a class field trip, a parent who was a chaperon approaches you and comments how much they enjoyed the field trip. At the end of the conversation they ask you to "friend" them on Facebook. You explain to them that it is unprofessional to be Facebook friends with a parent of a student. The parent shrugs off the comment. The following day they approach you about why you have yet to "friend" them on Facebook. How do you deal with the situation?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I personally do not see an issue with being Facebook friends with parents as long as it is professional. In fact, make sure that your personal status and pictures aren't visible to them or even create a professional Facebook page designated just for parents. It is the new millennium and Facebook is the best way for parents to communicate, build relationship to keep them involved and most importantly it keeps records of the conversation. |

Comments: A dedicated website might be better than social media. It's too easy to accidentally cross a line on facebook vs. through a unique site of your own. It also might be against school policy. |

Comments: Being friends on Facebook with a parent is never a good idea. I don't want to constantly have to worry about what pictures or things I post could be about what happened in school or make them think that I'm a bad teacher. |

Comments: I don't think being Facebook friends with parents can ever be professional. It could maybe create conflict between the student and the parent because what student wants their parents to be friends with their teachers? |

Comments: I do not agree that it is a good idea to be friends with student's parents on facebook. One post that a parent does not like could risk your job, and letting parents into your personal life could bring unwanted consequences. |

Comments: I would not do this, I would not have a Facebook account for my classroom/school, and there is a fine line with this situation of professionalism and unprofessionalism, this should be played safe and not have a Facebook at all for this. |

Comments: I do not think it is appropriate for the teacher to accept the friend request because it would be seen as unprofessional and the teacher does have a life other than school. I feel that if the parent does not like the teacher or does not agree with a post the teacher wrote then they can show the principal and the teacher could get into trouble for no reason. I think there are better ways then Facebook to communicate with parents such as emailing or sending newsletter home. |
