Home | How It Works | Stats Login | Register         Case: Inappropriate Language in class In your class, a student calls another student an inappropriate name. This behavior has occurred in the past and it is time to make the contact home. How would you approach this situation? Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!) Have a sit down talk with the student to see what may be happening at home with the child. Tell the student that you expect more from him and know they can demonstrate better actions from him. Inform student that you will not tolerate that sort of behavior from him no more. Encourage the student that you expect more from him and know that you shouldn't have to have the parents to get involved. Have student apologize to the student and continue to observe the student and praise student when he makes good behavioral decisions. This approach gives the student a chance to redeem themselves, and will likely solve the issue. Letting him call someone an inappropriate name multiple times without any serious repercussion only allows the student to believe that they can continue to call other students names. After talking previously with the student, it is time to contact the parents. The teacher should have a sit down with the parent. There may be something going on at home that has affected his behavior in class. We shouldn't make the student feel bad. That is not our job as teachers. Our job is to want them to enjoy school and not feel as if you are disappointed in them. I think it is a good idea to at least write in the planner what is going on between students, that way parents can just be in the loop. And if need be, then a call home.
