Case: Two boys who tend to derail the class, any ideas?
I'll be teaching 3rd grade this year and have at lest 2 boys who tend to derail the class and be challenging. Do you have any out-of-the-box ideas on how to connect with them and manage their behavior before it begins? and to keep it consistently managed?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
You could give them some class responsibilities, depending on what it is this can really make kids step-up. Assigning classroom jobs gives students opportunities to contribute in meaningful ways and helps teachers feel less stress about having to take responsibility for all of the jobs to run the classroom. Show students appreciation for helping with classroom activities and they get a self-esteem boost as well. |

Comments: Unfortunately, I do not feel that assigning classroom jobs as a way to help out the teacher is the solution in this scenario. Assessing the situation when it occurs (does it always happen in Math, does it occur during seatwork, etc) may provide insight into what triggers the behavior and present a way to solve the problem; seating the students away from each other is a beginning. |

Comments: I do not believe this would be the best option as challenging student when they have jobs they tend to disrupt even more. |

Comments: Although the idea of classroom jobs is important to motivate good behavior, I don't think that this would be a solution for this particular case. I also don't see how teacher stress could be affecting this situation. |

Comments: Although some think this is a bad solution, I think that this truly is a great solution. Giving potential troublemakers more assigned work or responsibilities, will not only make them more accountable but possibly, even more, a reason to step up. |

Comments: This could definitely work because it could force them to do and be better as role models for the rest of the class. |

Comments: I like the idea of giving them classroom responsibilities. It may curb the behavior problem if they are occupied and have a job that they feel is important. |

Comments: I do believe that kids that act up sometimes is because they are bored and they are leaders they are not meant to follow, by giving them responsibilities they can maybe work to their full potential |
