  Case: Always Off Task
I have one student in my class that is always off task. We give him options and incentives in hopes it will brings his attention back to the task or assignment but he always seems to get back off task. When he is off task he will distract other students and can make it difficult to regain full control of the class unless he is removed. Any other ideas for how to keep him on task for longer periods of time?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Students who get off task are always difficult to work with as the cause could be multiple different things. This could be a reaction to being bored or under stimulated. Or the student could have ADHD. Or he just could be a normal kid! I would give him specific instructions to follow (like maybe a personal checklist)so that he is never unsure of what to do. Then, he can check the things off that he has completed and move to the next thing without need of direction. You could also have him do a certain job during the lesson to keep him more engaged such as passing out certain materials or turning on/off the lights if watching a video. This will give him a sense of responsibility in the classroom that might give learning more purpose.

Comments: I like this solution because it keep the student engaged and stimulated. You can give a student all the incentives in the world but if they have some sort of an issue where they can't help it then that will never work.

Comments: A checklist is such a good idea! This allows him to focus on one thing at a time, and can also allow him to move ahead when he feels bored. A job would also be helpful.

Comments: In the end, there's always a reason behind the behavior. That reason could simply be that the student's bored or it could be something complicated like an intellectual disorder but there is always a reason. Be sure to investigate and try to figure out any possible reasons behind the behavior before acting on the behavior.

Comments: I like the solution because it essentially gives the student mini goals to aim for and allows for the student to have responsibilities that they can look forward to after they have been on task, which will hopefully leave them feeling accomplished.

Comments: I love this solution. I love how reassuring it was for parents that these behaviors could be normal or even if they were ADHD that it is okay and there are possibilities.
