Case: Student can read but not comprehend The teacher has a student who can read every word in the book. He also can comprehends some of the story but doesn't understand the deeper meaning behind the story. The teacher has tried to go page by page with the student but sometimes he still doesn't understand. The teacher believes the student may not understand some of the story because of experience and lack of vocabulary. Where should she start to problem solve to help the student? Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!) I think a good strategy to help with comprehension is starting off a new book, or subject by doing a book walk, or chapter walk. Have the student go through the story or chapter, looking at the pictures or vocabulary words, and have them discuss what they think it may be about before starting the book, chapter or lesson. |
