  Case: Retaining Request
You are a 5th grade teacher and it is the end of the school year. A parent approaches you and requests that their child be retained. You feel that the student does not need to be retained as he has not shown any areas of difficulty in his studies. He also has received "A's" and "B's" on all his report cards and has high test scores. However, the parent claims that he is not ready to start middle school the following year. How do you deal with the situation?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would ask the parents why they feel this way first of all. Then, I would tell the parents that they need to speak with the administration because I cannot modify the As and Bs the child earned which indicate that he should be promoted to the sixth grade.

Comments: Exactly. If the student is passing academically, I would suggest sharing their concerns with a counselor or administration; however, I certainly do not agree with retention with no statistical reasoniing.

Comments: I feel that saying this to the parents could suggest that the administrators will modify the students grades.

Comments: This response seems like you are not concerned with the student at all, you are just putting it off on administration.

Comments: I do not agree with this statement, by telling the parent that they should talk to administration seems like you are passing the parent along and do not care about the situation.

Comments: I think the teacher needs to bring in the administration for a larger meeting, and include counceling to help the student with whatever issues they are going to have.

Comments: This isn't appropriate because it passes off the responsibility to other school staff, who did not spend the school year with the student. It also comes across as immature on the side of the teacher.

Comments: I think the best idea is to refer the parent to the administration that way they can calmly talk to her about the situation.
