Case: Being Viewed as the Teacher
I am interning in a middle school class, grades 6-7. My CT has procedures in place for a classroom management plan and for the most part it seems to be effective. The issue I am experiencing, even when I implement her procedures and expectations, is that the students don’t view me as the “teacher figure.” This is especially true in times where I am left alone with the students. I find that my CT and I have different demeanors - and I think that might play a role in how the students view us. I’m more soft spoken and don’t have a loud protected voice. How do I get the students to view me as another one of their teachers while still maintaining my softer, kinder demeanor? I don’t want to come across too harsh or unnatural sounding if I need to be more stern with the kids.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
This can be difficult, especially since you are not with these students everyday and your CT has been with her students everyday for the entirety of the school year thus far. I think one of the best strategies to utilize as an intern is ensuring to implement the classroom management plan, classroom rules/consequences, and the procedures that the teacher has been implementing since day one of her students being in her classroom. By doing this, it could let the students know that you too should be treated with the same amount of respect that they give their teacher.

The suggested solution is likely to solve the problem/issue No

Comments: The only problem I have with this solution is that you can attempt to implement the CT’s management plan but if they do not respect you it will not work. You can be kind and carry yourself in a passive manor and still demand their respect.

Comments: Yes, it is important to maintain classroom management and respect the students so they respect you. The classroom is a team and it includes everyone.

Comments: I think this would be something I would do, the children are probably just testing you to see the boundaries. The consistent rules will hopefully keep them together.

Comments: I don't disagree with this solution, but the case study explains that she is implementing the rules the teacher uses but is still having a problem with the class.

Comments: I agree with upholding the CT's rules and plan. Students may act out if their schedule is changed or if sudden shifts in the classroom occur. Changing the student's expectations and/or discipline rules is like starting the school year over again, which can cause chaos.

Comments: This may not work, because this is what she is doing right now. I just think sometimes when a teacher has already implemented those strategies, it's hard to mimic for a person who doesn't have the same demeanor as the main teacher. Each person has to find their own voice in this.
