  Case: Group presentations
After my class completes a group project I usually ask who wants to present/speak out of the group then after the student presents I ask if the others wanted to add anything. Is this the right way to go about presentations or should I have everyone say something?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
It might be useful to have all the students present/speak during the presentation because then you know that everyone played a roll and helped out. In my opinion and what I have seen in the past is that, one student will do all the work and present and then everyone else in the group gets an A even though they did not contribute. I would have the group assign different sections of the presentation, that way it allows all members to speak and hold responsibility for their part. I have also found that making sure students are given a rubric is very useful that way they know exactly what is expected for the group as well as them individually.

Comments: It is always good to hold all the students responsible and giving them a rubric is very important as well.

Comments: Having all students in a group contribute is important so that one student doesn't do all the work and others benefit from their hard work.

Comments: I agree that being provided a rubric is very helpful, but it doesn't change the fact that a lot of times one person does all the work. There has to be more accountability from the teacher by assigning specific parts of the project to each member of the group or assigning a group leader to divide the project evenly and report to the professor when anyone isn't contributing.

Comments: I think it's good to have everyone speak, but maybe they can stay where they're at when they speak because they are many students that dread the idea of speaking in front of others.

Comments: I like the idea of having each student assigned a part of the presentation group. This also helps all students work on their presentation skills.

Comments: While this may be a good solution, it can cause students to dread group projects and not fully participate due to fear. Splitting up the work is fine, everyone can be given an area to research, but when it comes to presenting, students should have the option to only have some group members talk, in order to decrease stress on students who have a large fear of public speaking. I recommend adding a written portion, such as a brief typed summary of the section the student completed, and have them turn it in individually. This way students can be held accountable for doing work and contributing.
