  Case: Team participation
I teach an afterschool STEAM program which requires team participation. This class gives the students a lot of freedom, however, I have two students in one group that rarely participate. Most of the time the two students are meowing to each other and pretending to be cats. I can get them to participate when I assign them a task that interests them, but this is usually a task I would consider as busy work. I would really like them to get the most out of the group task that I present them with and not just do busy work. How can I get them to participate more and not be a distraction to others?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Give them kinesthetic teaching opportunities or see if you can provide them with enrichment opportunities. The content may not be challenging enough.

Comments: Although I do think providing the students with kinesthetic learning opportunities is beneficial, doing this all the time could cause students to become off task by talking with their peers. Kinesthetic learning is great, however, it needs to be done in a structured manner.

Comments: I understand what you're saying, but the content is one that has to be learned so I think focusing on changing the way it's taught would be the change needed because the content has to stay.

Comments: Good post. I think people forget that students become bored. It is not always that they just do not care. They may not be challenged enough.

Comments: I don't know that this is helpful especially since the only work they are engaged in is busy work. It might actually be that the work is too difficult for them so they shut down.
