Case: Being Viewed as the Teacher
I am interning in a middle school class, grades 6-7. My CT has procedures in place for a classroom management plan and for the most part it seems to be effective. The issue I am experiencing, even when I implement her procedures and expectations, is that the students don’t view me as the “teacher figure.” This is especially true in times where I am left alone with the students. I find that my CT and I have different demeanors - and I think that might play a role in how the students view us. I’m more soft spoken and don’t have a loud protected voice. How do I get the students to view me as another one of their teachers while still maintaining my softer, kinder demeanor? I don’t want to come across too harsh or unnatural sounding if I need to be more stern with the kids.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
A lot of my friends in this program experience this problem. To avoid these situations, never take a "back seat" while interning. If your cooperating teacher wishes to teach, ask him or her if you can try a co-teacher model. This will allow your students to begin seeing you in that position. Also, for future reference, utilize your first few weeks to establish solid relationships with your students. Once your students feel a connection with you, they will perform for you.

Comments: I completely agree with this solution. As an intern, you have to assert yourself as a teacher if you want the students to respect you as such.

Comments: I love this! Be as involved as possible in the classroom! Never take a "back seat"! Most teachers love and encourage more participation from interns. Try bringing some of your own ideas to the teacher and ask if you can do those activities with the students. This will definitely show the students that you are more of a co-teacher rather than a intern/ student teacher.

Comments: I like this solution. By establishing a connection with the students, you're no longer "just an intern" that they can mess with. The co-teacher model should also let them start thinking of you as the teacher.

Comments: Suddenly having two teachers can cause confusion for students. Also, I don't believe interns should jump in and try and be disciplinary right away. Ease your way into it, starting off by being a helper, and slowly increase your authority in the classroom.

Comments: I absolutely agree with this solution! I think sometimes you still need to put on that "hard hat", though, and as a teacher sometimes you just have to develop a thick skin. Oftentimes, I will say things like "No thank you!" in a sharp voice, haha. Still trying to use my manors but letting the students know I am serious. Especially in upper grades, they will try to walk over you and get what they want (most times).

Comments: Good job. It is important to show that even though you are not the "teacher" you are still an adult figure in the class that deserves the same respect.

Comments: This is a helpful solution. It is important for students to see you as a teacher as well. If they see you taking on a side by side role with the other teacher it makes them realize you are there as a teacher as well.

Comments: This is a great solution. Co-teacher most certainly make the students know that you are the person in charge when the CT is out of the room for any reason.
