  Case: thinking on the spot
I teach an afterschool STEAM program at multiple schools every week. Each class we do a different project. For example this semester the theme is occupations and one of the projects was learning about Marine biologists and what they do. For the project we were to make our own plankton out of modeling clay and add to it to make it float just beneath the surface of the water like plankton does. However, I had no modeling clay in my supplies (which are packed and then delivered to be the day before I need them) so I was unprepared and had to think on the spot to change the lesson plan. I hated feeling unprepared, and the class became a lot more chaotic than when I am fully prepared for class. I confronted my boss about the lack of supplies and she said she would talk to whoever packs the materials, however, since then it has happened again. How do I go about fixing this problem?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I feel that if the supplies are being delivered to you the day before you teach the lesson, it is your responsibility to check the materials and ensure that everything you need is present. If materials are not present, you can go out and buy the materials that you need or you can change your lesson (up to you). I'm glad that you confronted your boss, if that is who is in charge of packing your materials. If they are not, then that is who you need to be confronting about the issue.

Comments: I liked this solution because it is up to the teacher to make sure that she has the supplies. If the supplies don't get to you by the end of the day the day before the lesson the teacher needs to contact the necessary individuals and figure out how to go get the items or go purchase the items or make a new plan before the class starts so that the students are none the wiser.

Comments: Being prepared is key. If you check the box the day before, you then have time to go to your boss and say "hey, I am missing this." That way you are letting him know again, staying prepared, and putting the pressure on your boss to fix it before the next day.

Comments: I like this solution because it provides the idea that we also need to take accountability for things that might not be in our control. But as teachers, things change daily and we need to adapt to it.

Comments: I like this solution. Looking through the materials before the lesson should prevent this problem, especially if they have the materials the day before.

Comments: I absolutely agree with this solution. It is always good to be prepared the day before! If things are too hectic and you find yourself needing to make something up on the spot, I find that problems like that are just all in the job. It's great to be adaptive!

Comments: This is a great solution. When we plan lesson plans in such advance, we think we have it all together when we get our supplies taken care of the day before. Unfortunately though, this situation is much like going through the drive-thru,you should always check your take-out/supplies before leaving and running the risk of not having something your are expecting to have. I would add however, that if you end up having to change your lesson the day before such as in an instance like the students are not grasping the content like you thought they would and you need to go in depth, I would just buy the supplies and turn in your receipt. However, if there is no one that can reimburse you, I would keep a baggie of receipts to include in your tax form the following year.

Comments: It is great that you brought this issue up to your boss, but it sounds like materials need to be ordered and delivered in more timely manner, rather than the day before a lesson. Planning ahead can definitely help improve classroom management.

Comments: I like this solution until the point where you recommend buying the materials yourself. Not only will this not always be an option but, if the people that SHOULD be getting these materials catches wind of what you're doing, they might start getting lazy and start doing this (or not doing this, I guess) even more often.
