  Case: Smoking
I have a student who smokes cigarettes. He told me him and his mom smoke together. How do I provide guidance to my student when his parents can't help show support themselves. I do not know how to appreciate the situation without the student feeling cornered.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
It is sad that his parents encourage this behavior and you cannot change the actions that parents take at home. Maybe you could bring this up to his health teacher or guidance counselor and they could show him the harm in smoking cigarettes.

The suggested solution is respectful of the individual (student) No
The suggested solution is relevant to the case Yes
The suggested solution is reasonable (easy) for the teacher to implement No
The suggested solution is likely to solve the problem/issue No
The suggested solution is original Yes
Comments: If this child is of legal age unfortunately there is not much that can be done, especially since they have obviously always been around smoking outside of school. Monitoring the child's health at school and preventing them from smoking on school property is about as much as can be done. Having a class on the negative effects of smoking won't do much for someone who is constantly surrounded by other smokers.

Comments: You shouldn't talk to other teachers and break that trust you have built with the student.

Comments: I'm not sure having the health teacher would be the best idea in this scenario.

Comments: I a disagree with this solution. I would talk to the student, instead of passing it on to one of my colleagues that may or may not talk to the student.
