Case: Students do not bring pencils and forget to return when I loan them.
Our school policy (and district+state) requires that when students do not bring pencils, teachers are required to supply. In fact, in our state it's against the law NOT to supply a pencil in class if a pencil is needed to do the work. I am fine with this rule. However, I have couple of students who forget to bring pencils frequently and ask for a new one each time. They seem to lose them all the time. Do you have this problem? How do you deal with it? Any thoughts?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would establish a pencil box on the teacher's desk. Students must write down their names when they take a pencil. At the end of the day, the teacher can collect the pencils. You may also want to ask parents for supplies.

Comments: I think this is a wonderful solution. A sign out sheet will make the teacher aware of which students are consistently keeping the pencils. Once there is a visual log, the teacher can contact the parents to help the situation or help to provide a pack of pencils for when their child forgets.

Comments: This is an excellent solution. Establishing a pencil box is what I have seen in almost all of my substituting classrooms.

Comments: Yes, simply keeping track of who gets the pencils and collecting them at the end of the day is effective

Comments: Asking for supplies from parents can be helpful but I'm not sure the list would be helpful, it's hard to ensure that students write down their names.

Comments: I like this solution, it's simple but also will most likely reduce or eliminate the problem. Having the students write down their names and then the teacher can call out the names or walk around to those students to get the pencils back.
