Case: student who gets upset at any criticism
I was shadowing in an elementary classroom and there was a student who anytime he was corrected for something would start crying. The classroom had two teachers and they are fantastic. These women were extremely nice and caring to their students. So I know it was not how they were saying it. One teacher informed me that it does not matter who says something to him this is how he reacts. She told me she would take him out of the class and they would go for walks so he could calm down and not be embarrassed by crying in the classroom. When they would get back in the class the teacher would sit privately with the student so he could complete the work. I am aware of his underlying issue. But I was wondering what other ways can the teachers try and fix this problem that does not involve removing the student from the classroom? I know they do it with best intentions but then the student misses out on educational time. Are there other ways to correct him that would not cause him to cry? The teachers are not yelling. They say things like "I am not a fan of your behavior right now" or "that is not the right way to do that but here let me show you how". They are taking the appropriate steps but I feel like it is the child who does not respond well to any type of criticism. Any advice?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I feel like the teachers are encouraging this behavior by taking him outside of the classroom, because by them doing this he knows that if he cry he gets taken out of the class. I think that the teachers should address the whole class about how to take constructive criticism and that to grow and learn we might need to know about what mistakes we made. If this happens again I would encourage the teachers to no take the student out of the class, like you said he is missing critical class time what he gets taken out. If the crying becomes distracting to the class I would remove him from where he is siting and try to move him to where he inst distracting class time.

Comments: The teachers are definitely encouraging the behavior by taking him out of the classroom every time he has a melt down.

Comments: I agree. As far as a student would see this, you're rewarding his behavior right now. That's a REALLY bad idea.

Comments: I like this solution as well. Students should be in their classrooms, ready to learn.

Comments: I agree, talk to the whole class instead of that one student so they won't feel isolated.

Comments: I feel like this may be embarrassing for the student. I think that maybe you should pull the student aside and try and find what the problem is, if that does not help I would try having a conference with the parents.

Comments: I think a more gentle approach would be better. This might make the child feel as though reacting emotionally to things is wrong. There could be a class discussion, but not singling him out would be best.

Comments: I think this is a good solution. Removing the students from the class is encouraging the behavior and it may be a reason for him doing this.
