Case: student who gets upset at any criticism
I was shadowing in an elementary classroom and there was a student who anytime he was corrected for something would start crying. The classroom had two teachers and they are fantastic. These women were extremely nice and caring to their students. So I know it was not how they were saying it. One teacher informed me that it does not matter who says something to him this is how he reacts. She told me she would take him out of the class and they would go for walks so he could calm down and not be embarrassed by crying in the classroom. When they would get back in the class the teacher would sit privately with the student so he could complete the work. I am aware of his underlying issue. But I was wondering what other ways can the teachers try and fix this problem that does not involve removing the student from the classroom? I know they do it with best intentions but then the student misses out on educational time. Are there other ways to correct him that would not cause him to cry? The teachers are not yelling. They say things like "I am not a fan of your behavior right now" or "that is not the right way to do that but here let me show you how". They are taking the appropriate steps but I feel like it is the child who does not respond well to any type of criticism. Any advice?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would avoid critiquing the student during class. Whenever there is an assignment, use written instruction or one on one private meetings. If the student is crying quietly and not causing a disturbance, then let the student cry in the classroom and don’t draw attention to it. If it is disruptive and you’ve done everything to make it private it is time to have another meeting with parents.
I hope this helps. |

Comments: That's still critiquing the student's work, though. This might not change anything, just the location of where the student has a meltdown. |

Comments: I do not think this is the best solution because every student needs some sort of positive critiquing. |

Comments: This is not how I would handle the situation. I disagree with this solution because it does not solve the problem and it may cause the child embarrassment in front of their peers. |
