Case: student who gets upset at any criticism
I was shadowing in an elementary classroom and there was a student who anytime he was corrected for something would start crying. The classroom had two teachers and they are fantastic. These women were extremely nice and caring to their students. So I know it was not how they were saying it. One teacher informed me that it does not matter who says something to him this is how he reacts. She told me she would take him out of the class and they would go for walks so he could calm down and not be embarrassed by crying in the classroom. When they would get back in the class the teacher would sit privately with the student so he could complete the work. I am aware of his underlying issue. But I was wondering what other ways can the teachers try and fix this problem that does not involve removing the student from the classroom? I know they do it with best intentions but then the student misses out on educational time. Are there other ways to correct him that would not cause him to cry? The teachers are not yelling. They say things like "I am not a fan of your behavior right now" or "that is not the right way to do that but here let me show you how". They are taking the appropriate steps but I feel like it is the child who does not respond well to any type of criticism. Any advice?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
The teachers need to stop taking him out of the class. This is doing nothing but encouraging the behavior. They can easily incorporate in classroom ideas to help or support this student. Obliviously his behavior needs to be corrected because if they do not correct it then he will continue to do it. However. if he has a melt down they could add a calm down corner or chair in the class. This is a safe place where any student can go if they feel upset, sad or just need a moment to themselves. They can add a basket with books, stuffed animals, and sensory items. I would have clip art pictures of emotions on the wall, and have a What I Could Do? Wheel hanging on a hook by the pictures. This wheel lists ideas that student could do when they feel mad, sad, etc. I would also add a timer and make it a rule that they cannot be back there longer than 10 minutes. This will help them feel like they are in control over the situation and allows them to be in the classroom so, they do not miss any instruction time.

Comments: I agree. As far as a student would see this, you're rewarding his behavior right now. That's a REALLY bad idea.
