Maybe commenting back to the student in front of other students will be the icing on the cake for the student understanding that you are firm in this being your classroom and that there are rules and procedures set for a reason and that he is in control of passing or failing. It sounds like this student needs some tough love. Being firm with consequences and not letting the student have run of the classroom may help.
