  Case: Bed bugs
I have a student who has a bed bug problem at home. I have seen several of them in the classroom recently and I have alerted the office as well as the head plant operator. How should I approach the student and their family? Should I have the school counselor speak to them instead?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I believe that it is important to speak with the student individually to find out if they family has already begun the process of getting ride of the bed bugs. In addition, it may be helpful to speak with the school counselor or the nurse to find out if there is any community help or resources for the family if they are struggling to stop the spread of the bed bugs.

Comments: Going to the school counselor or the nurse is a great idea! Besides the parents, they have the most information and want the student to get rid of it ASAP.

Comments: From what I can tell about this post, the student has been coming to class for a few days already. I'm certain that the parents already know about the issue. Yet, the student is still coming to school and putting other students at risk. I think investigating if they know first would both

a) Embarrass the student
b) Waste time that could be spent solving the immediate problem.

Comments: I do not think you should speak to the child directly but instead to the child's parent or guardian.

Comments: Not a great solution. The student should not be a part of the conversation as they are not in control of the situation.

Comments: This is a very sensitive issue because the bed bug issue could be caused by financial issues with the family. The issue needs to be addressed very lightly and a meeting involving the teacher, parents, and school psychologist is the best way to do that.

Comments: Singling out the child is not a good idea. It can be embarrassing for them. I would immediately tell administration so they can get in touch with the family to come up with a plan before the child can return to school.

Comments: talking to the student directly can be embarrassing for them, or a topic they don't know much about. speaking to the parents would be a better choice.
