  Case: Sleeping Student
A student constantly falls asleep during class. You wake them up several times but they just fall back asleep. What is the best way to handle this? Do you bring it up to the parents? Do you let the child sleep? Is it fair to the other students to let the child sleep?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would start by pulling the student to the side and talking to them about the situation. If this becomes more than a one time thing, then I would speak with the parents and ask if there is anything going on at home that is affecting the student's sleep schedule. Depending on how the parents respond and if the student continues to sleep during class I would get the school counselor or social worker involved because students can't sleep through class, they will not learn the content you are teaching.

Comments: I agree with this solution. Talking to the student first to see their point of view before going to the parent can help, as the parents might not know what is going on depending on what grade the student is in for example high school.

Comments: Even if you're pulling the student to the side, they might feel like they're being put on the spot while you ask them about everything.

Comments: I like this solution. Talking to the student would be a great first step into the right direction. The student may say something that would warrant the parents' attention right away, or allow the student time to fix their behavior without the parents.

Comments: You make a very good point, I believe that the teacher is seeking guidance because she keeps waking the student up but they keep falling asleep.
Talking to the student first and then the parents if the student does not stay awake.

Comments: This is a great way to handle the situation. If they continue to fall asleep daily then I would figure out a "plan b." We do not know what is going on at home, it literally could be anything.

Comments: I do believe this is an issue that needs to be addressed with the parents and school counselors if its something continuous because it may be something much more deeper than just a bad sleeping habit.
