However I feel like telling students not to engage in this type of discussion can do more harm that good. I feel like teacher driven this could be a good reminder to students that everyone has an opinion and they can chose to watch the new movie or stick with the original if they want, but that they will be missing out on a new interpretation of a loved character. All people are entitled to their opinion and educated citizens have a chance to make better ones. Avoiding the conversation will make kids come to their own assumptions or listen to bias peoples perspectives instead of them having a neutral talking point to express their perspectives. Students should be encouraged to explore new and different opinions from their own. Teachers are dedicated to teaching more than math and writing they should also teach about real world issues as we are preparing them t be active members in society!
