Case: COVID-19 Problems
With the era of COVID-19 happening, I have had students in my internship make jokes about the coronavirus. If one student coughs or sneezes, a few of the other students starts poking fun at the student saying that they have the virus and to stay away from that person. What do you do in a situation that involves a serious sickness like this?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
This situation is new to all of us and we have all had to make some big adjustments in our teachings. I think general education about the corona virus, who it affects, how it works, and why it is a serious problem may be very helpful for your students. You may also want to go over classroom rules and expectations that coincide with your schools and the districts antibullying policy. |

Comments: I really like how you took it a step farther to educate the class about bullying. This is a form of bullying and it isn't acceptable behavior at any grade level. Nipping this type of poor behavior right away is very crucial to any successful classroom management plan. |

Comments: I agree. It is important students realize that it is a serious matter and not to be joked about, especially at the expense of their classmates. Reinforcing classroom expectations should also make it clear that teasing is not going to be tolerated. |

Comments: I think it is important to teach them about COVID and going over rules enforces that negative reactions to coughs or sneezes are not something to joke about |

Comments: I think that this solution would be effective. Making it clear that this type of behavior is inappropriate but acknowledging and addressing that this is a difficult time and although making jokes acts as a way for us to disassociate from the issue at hand- it still is not appropriate for a learning environment. |

Comments: Yes, trying to explain to students the seriousness of the virus and how many lives it has changed and ended may change their views and jokes on the topic. |

Comments: I think this is the perfect solution to this problem. It teaches the students that this virus is not a joking matter and that bullying in any form is not acceptable. |
