Case: Managing Students on Microsoft Teams
As the coronavirus has brought up new difficulties for teachers to solve, many teachers are teaching online through microsoft teams. However, many of the students stay muted with their cameras off. How can you ensure class participation in this setting?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
While I do not utilize the Teams platform, I am an intern in the eLearning environment, utilizing ZOOM. In order to avoid this issue, the classroom teacher and I set some ground rules prior to the beginning of the school year, which we reviewed with students on the first day of class. This included rules that were numbered, such as "1 Voice," meaning there should only be one voice heard at any point while class is in session and explained to students that they are to remained muted unless they are called on. They received less participation points automatically if their camera was not turned on. If you address these things from the very beginning, it should not be an issue, but if it does become one, you can address students directly as needed.

Comments: I think this is a good way to handle it. Tie their participation grades to their camera being on, in addition to active participation. Staying muted as the default is good idea, and students can unmute when they are asked to speak. If the camera being off is never addresses they will continue to think it okay to do.

Comments: I think this is the best response to the situation because the ground rules are key to having the basis of expectations for the class as well as the one voice rule. The rules discussed in the beginning are crucial to having a basis of understanding for all.

Comments: Yes, I agree this is the best solution. Requiring these rules at the beginning of the course will assure that you made it a clear rule that takes points off their grade. Students will be more inclined to keep cameras on, and addressing directly will allow the student more structure on the rule.
