Case: Managing Students on Microsoft Teams
As the coronavirus has brought up new difficulties for teachers to solve, many teachers are teaching online through microsoft teams. However, many of the students stay muted with their cameras off. How can you ensure class participation in this setting?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Requiring students to have their Cameras ON (to be accounted as a present for the day) could easily help teachers observe their students' activities during lectures. Additionally, random calling on students during the lecture can also initiate student participation. This will require more balancing on the teacher's part and potentially dual computer screens for better efficiency, but it will help class participation.
Students can also work in small groups in Microsoft Teams -- this will increase student participation greatly. |

| Comments: While this is a good response I do not think some aspects are the best. The randomized calling, while it does ensure participation, can cause students to be fearful and induce anxiety for some. Teachers can require students to keep cameras on and can have them use paper or software signs to give thumbs up, question, etc. to participate when necessary. |

| Comments: Keep the students on their toes. They will know that they may be called on randomly and if they don't answer then they could lose participation points and receive consequences. |

| Comments: I agree that having group work and requiring cameras to be on can increase participation. However, it should be noted that sometimes students are not comfortable or cannot have their cameras on. In that case, it would not be best to use that as attendance. |
