Case: Virtual Learning & Inappropriate Behavior
The teacher is required to teach both in-person students and virtual students at the same time. Students online are required to keep their mic OFF (unless asking a question or responding to a question) and cameras OFF at all times. One Virtual student decided to keep their Mic ON while going to the bathroom. Disrupting the class with the noises of them using the bathroom. They also decided to say "Sorry, you have to hear me pee, I couldn't hold it anymore". The following week the student used offensive language to answer a question. Both times the teacher kicked the student out of the virtual classroom.

Was this the right solution? How does a teacher handle these new behavior issues that come with virtual learning?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I do not feel like the teacher should have kicked the student out of the virtual classroom: however, I do understand the frustration. I believe there is an option for the teacher to mute specific students, but that is not a preferred approach nor will it address the problem. I would first have students interact with an online lesson/activity where they can learn and practice appropriate behavior when learning online. I would then warn any students who are not following online learning expectations, either in the moment or after school via phone call, facetime, email, etc. If it still continues to be a problem, I would notify the parents.

Comments: I agree here! Reaching out to the students parents should be the last resort, but if the bahavior continues it would be a no brainer for me.

Comments: I disagree. I think that kicking the student out was necessary for the offense going on. Addressing the parents about the behavior though I do agree is the next step.

Comments: I think this is the best solution. The child should not have been kicked out and the parents should definitely be notified about their child's behavior. A lesson can be revisited about virtual school expectations and also create a no-tolerance policy where the student's parents or administration will be notified if the behaviors continue.

Comments: I don't think the student will take the course seriously to be honest. It would be very easy to breeze through the course and convince the teacher that he learned his lesson since it is all online.

Comments: for the restroom issue, i do not think he should have been kicked out, just reminded of the microphone issue. Chances are it is the students first time learning virtually as well. If it happened again then I would take more action to remedy the problem. As far as the language, it is very disrespectful and I would have also kicked the student out of the virtual room.

Comments: A lesson about behavior, classroom management, and consequences and so on is a great tool to use at the beginning of the academic school year.
