Case: Student physically acting out
I have a student who consistently acts out during class. He will get physical and pick up chairs and throw them across the room. Other students are in danger when this happens and every time we try to calm him down his behavior just worsens. We have tried to talk to parents and administration has been involved. What is the next step to get this under control?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would first inform the administration or guidance counselor at your school to see if they can do anything to help. I would also reach out to the parents of the child and explain to them what's been happening, a behavioral management plan may be needed |

Comments: While I think this is a great response I do not think it is the best response. The case study states that the parents and administration have been involved and informed before and nothing has been resolved since then. The teacher could reach out again but there needs to be an intervention plan in addition. |

Comments: While this may be correct in the end, finding a trigger and trying to diffuse the situation may be beneficial before meeting with the parents when you do not have enough documented for why the child would be acting out. Sometimes behavioral issues can stem from a medical condition the child and parents are not aware of. Teachers would want to tread lightly before making an hypothetical guess of something being wrong medically. Teachers should have substantial evidence for their concerns to present before speaking to the parents and involving administration unless the child poses a threat to themselves or others. |

Comments: I think it is integral in this situation that admin and families are informed. The other solutions lacked this element. |
