Case: Off topic / unrelated discussions
Every time my teacher puts the students in groups they just talk about topics unrelated to the class and usually always get off topic. How can she address this problem without singling these students out?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
The teacher should make sure the groups are an appropriate size and composition. She can try to assign each student a role and hold each (and the team) accountable for an end product. If that doesn't work, she should speak to these students individually to determine if there is a problem in the group she's unaware of. It may just be that friends are together in groups and not focusing on the work. |

Comments: I agree that giving each student a separate part of the assignment would help. I also think having the proper size helps. If there are too many students in a group then that is just initiating discussion. |

Comments: I believe that considering group composition as a potential problem is important. The additional consideration of if the tasks suited for group work could also be a factor. Furthermore, I believe the suggestion of holding them accountable for an end product could be very helpful to motivating them to be on task. Additionally, periodic check ins with group progress towards their task could help keep students on task as they never know when the teacher wants to see what they progress they have made towards achieving their goals. |

Comments: Assigning roles in the group is very novel! Also telling students that any work left over is homework. |

Comments: I think that making sure the groups are small and having roles is a great way to make sure they are on task and working on the assignment. |

Comments: Individualization is best. Write a reflection for each assignment considering how effectively it grabbed each students attention. Use it as feedback for your next one. |
