Case: Cooperative Groups and Uncooperative Students
I have a student with autism who comes into my classroom for social studies and science each day. He has a very difficult time working with others and getting along. If he loses at something or someone does something better than him, he has a meltdown. This has made it very difficult to do any group work in social studies and science. What are some solutions to help him better get along with his peers and able to work in cooperative groups?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I have had students like this that we understand will have meltdowns and have found that they usually work better on their own and if there is group work if they have a question or want to collaborate there is a group that they can jump into when they would like to. Pushing them to collaborate will only make their meltdowns occur more often and typically increase in severity. I have found that letting them work on their own and letting them interact on their own accord has helped greatly.
