  Case: Kids or Products?
With a vast variety of researched based information to state the contrary , schools have decided to limit the recess for elementary students to 15 minutes in the district. Students and teachers continue to deal with behavior issues in the class which can greatly impact classroom instruction. I believe part of this problem lies in the lack of free time allotted for the students. They are after all children. Recess promotes team work, verbal communication, sportsmanship, exercise, and creative expression through the arts. Unfortunately, the present approach is to run students through the process of learning as if this will produce an atypical product. When children are authentic and need the time to decompress from instruction as well as converse with their peer group with limited adult influence. At least allow the students to have a full thirty minute recess. They are children not bottles of Cola.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
It is shown taking away children's recess negatively effects their classroom performance. I try to never take away recess as a punishment. It lets kids get all of their energy out in a healthy environment. Everyone, even adults, need breaks in between hours of learning. Maybe two 15 minutes recesses would work?
