  Case: Parents won’t acknowledge disability
What to do if a child has a learning disability and the parents refuse to acknowledge it?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
When parents are confronted with the idea that their child may have a learning disability, they may feel depressed and sad. Some parents might believe they are somehow to blame for the condition or the circumstances. Parents may also be in denial or express their frustration physically or by directing someone else.
It used to bother me that parents could deny their child the right to the appropriate accommodations or modifications the student may need to see a successful learner. However, as educators, we can still provide students with those to meet their needs. Yet, recently I learned from my ESE professor that there are rare cases where the child is in high demand of extra support that cannot be provided solely by the classroom teacher. Then there are actionable steps we as educators can take to further progress the process. However, this should only be done in extreme cases. Everything must be well documented to further the process for the student's benefit. In rare circumstances, exceptional cases may be challenged and must be reported to a school social worker. This is not to cause discomfort or drama to the family, only to have the child's best interest in mind and do what is best for the child.
