Case: ESOL student transferred back to previous classroom and is almost completely silent
An ESOL student, new to America, was moved to another class and had to be switched back due to difficulty providing the necessary accommodations and support. Before switching classes, the student would engage in class discussions and conversations with peers. Now, the student has entered a more significant "silent period" than before and heavily relies on using accommodations to communicate. How can I help them feel comfortable with speaking and using English again?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would reach out to the previous switch teacher and see if anything happened that caused this change. I would probably also contact the parents to see if they know anything that has happened at home. I wonder if the child was bullied, which affected learning and confidence. Once you get a little history you might be able to create a plan on how to help.
