  Case: First B
It is the end of the marking period, and I just gave my final unit test for the quarter. I passed out progress reports to my students at the end of each period. After school, I had a visit from one of my most engaged students who was crying and very upset. Her current grade is an 89.45%, and she says that she has never before received a "B" in any class. What is my next step?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Offer the student an extra credit assignment. The student is .55% from an A. Half of a percent is probably equivalent to missing one question on a quiz or a simple grammatical error on a paper.

Comments: A B is a B and should remain so. Offering extra credit to one student so that she can maintain her "A" status is not only unfair to the other students who may also be in the same position (just not as vocal about it)but teaches the student a negative lesson. Additionally, telling her that a "B" is still a good grade is not what she wants to hear. Reviewing her work when she has calmed dowm to see where there could be improvement and advise her why she received the B is the best and most respectful avenue to take.

Comments: I think it is unfair unless the extra credit opportunity is given to all students
