Case: SPEAK ENGLISH!
I am a Kindergarden teacher that has a big group of hispanic students in the classroom. Many of them do not know how to speak English and thus makes it very complicated and frustrating to communicate. What is even worse, is that these students tend to speak Spanish when they are amongst themselves. Clearly, as a teacher I want them to be able to Participate, however, I am not sure whether or not I should separate them and forcé them to leave their native tongue at home.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
As a kindergarten teacher, this is a problem I encounter nearly every year with a large group of Hispanic students in my classroom. What I generally tell students is that the playground and lunch table is the time they may speak in Spanish. In any educational setting, English will be spoken. I would not try to separate them, just encourage them to speak English in the classroom. |

Comments: I do not feel this is a solution I would use as the students should not be forced to only speak English in the classroom if they do not know it. They may be speaking in Spanish to each other to verify directions. Grouping the class with English and Spanish speakers to work on activities will more than likely help the Spanish students pick up the English language. |

Comments: It is completely NOT okay to tell students when or when they cannot speak their native tongue! |

Comments: I do not agree witht this method. A students native language is important to incorporate into the classroom enviornment. |

Comments: I do not think that this is an appropriate way to deal with this situation. Instead of encouraging the learning aspect, we would be shutting kids down and they may not want to be involved in the lesson anymore. |

Comments: I agree that you have to encourage them to speak English in the classroom and that they should only speak Spanish at the playground and at lunch but I still think that sitting together, they might still be in their own little world and not feel inclined to participate, so I will still separate them. |

Comments: I feel that this solution is inappropriate and not helpful. It takes away the opportunity for the students to hold onto their native language. I would not follow this solution. |

Comments: I understand but this will make the student not want to talk. Because they're scared to or because they do not understand English. |
