Case: I Wish I Were Black!
As a teacher of 5th grade students, I try to make sure that my students have a good sense of all the people and cultures that make up this country. Last couple weeks, I paid special attention to the African American people who have made significant contributions to the US. We read a book written by Walter Dean Myers. We have studied scientists, writers, and political figures. Students were very engaged and interested in the content. Yesterday something happened that puzzled me. Three of my White students told me that they wished they were Black. This was not my intention when I planned all my lessons on contributions of African Americans. How should I address this issue?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Embrace it. Although it may not have been your intention in the beginning, a situation has been created in which a unique response has bubbled up. Ask the students why they feel that way today and not yesterday or last week? What part of your discussion and lessons conjured up this feeling with them? I think that because the students responded in this manner is a tribute to how well the unit and lessons were structured and taught as usually very little attention is given to issues of the history of other races in America.

The suggested solution is relevant to the case Yes
The suggested solution is reasonable (easy) for the teacher to implement Yes
The suggested solution is likely to solve the problem/issue Yes
The suggested solution is original Yes
Comments: I really like what you had to say-- it made me see this situation in a new light. As a teacher, I think it's important for us to ask the students questions to better understand their thinking. It would be beneficial to know why they wished they were black and what made them think that. Interesting read!

Comments: I think your solution is right on track with the problem. I think the students are expressing how they feel and how they wish that they could make that type of impact on history. I would probably quesitons to the entire classroom, with some question of if you were that person would you do the same things they did? why or why not?

Comments: I do like the dialogue however the missing piece is not discussing how the students should also embrace who they are.

Comments: I find that it would be the opposite reaction for the teacher rather than thiking it should be a tribute to how well the unit and lessons were structured and taught as usually very little attention is given to issues of the history of other races in America. I think it is important to see why they feel that way and to let them know every race has a an accomplishment somewhere somehow.

Comments: Although it wasn't the teachers intention I don't think the best option is just to embrace it. Teachers do things everyday with the right intention but that doesn't always turn out the way they liked. I think the best option would be to ask the students why they feel that way and what things in the lesson have made you think this. That way there is room for improvement on the teachers behalf and could fix the lesson to use it next year.

Comments: I feel that this solution is slightly inappropriate in encouraging students to wish they were different, especially within the color of their skin. I would not follow this solution.

Comments: I do not agree with the solution because instead of focusing on why the students want to be African American the focus should be on the the student embracing and being confident in their own race. Even just embracing who they are inside and out because that is what really makes a person not race.
