  Case: Silent Period
Grigor is in my 4th grade classroom. He came to the US last year with his family from Bulgaria. He was in 4th grade at our school last year as well. He was retained in 4th grade because he did not develop his English language skills. I learned about a "silent period" that children go through when they learn a new language. My guess is that Grigor is in the silent period. But it does not make sense to me that he would be in the silent period for almost two years. He does not say anything in class. He does not socialize with his classmates either. He can read and write in simple English though. His parents tell me that he acts completely normal at home and he is able to communicate with English speaking people at home when they have guests. This is really puzzling. I have to find a way to communicate with Grigor and discover what is holding him back from communicating with people at school. I need some help.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Find something that interests Grigor. Does he like writing, drawing, movies, coloring, or sports? You have to find some way to connect to Grigor through trial and error. I had a silent student once and I made it a point to ask him a personal question every day. He wouldn't answer for the first few weeks or just nod or shake his head, but eventually he came around. Be persistent in your attempts to reach out to him, and do not give up. If you find something you can relate to him with, he may come around. Ask his parents what he enjoys doing and somehow relate it into the content learned and allow him to use his talents in class.

Comments: I really like what you said about the teacher being persistent with the silent student. It might be somewhat overwhelming to the child at first, but if the teacher does it in a caring way and is not pushy then I think it would really benefit the child. Also, I think since the child is being silent, the teacher could set up an area in the classroom where Grigor could go to do his work or read, etc. Pairing him up with someone he can relate to would also be a great option. Contacting his parents and asking about his interests would be the first thing that I would do.

Comments: I think it is an excellent idea to relate to him on a personal level. Once you have been able to find something he enjoys, he may be more willing to speak to you about that subject. Once you have opened that door, you can incorporate learning into your talks. Connecting with a student on any level is a stepping stone.

Comments: Agreed. Sharing someone's interest is usually the best way to make them open up to you, especially with children, just be patient with them.

Comments: I think your solution will help resolve his problem opening up to the class. But I think asking the parents what he enjoys will definitely be the best route to take. It would definitely help to implement the things he is interested in and enjoys most into everyday instruction.

Comments: I think making a personal connection is vital to building a trusting relationship between Grigor and his teacher. I think the more he can participate with his peers in small groups or hands-on activities, the more comfortable he will feel interacting with his peers. You make a great point to be persistent and never give up!

Comments: I agree with trying to find common ground, or a connection with rigor to help him open up, but I am against asking him a personal question every day. If anything, that may make him withdraw more. If he doesn't start opening up on his own after trying to find common ground with him, I would set up a parent conference and involve a school counselor or psychologist to see what is going on with the child.

Comments: I do agree that he needs to ask personal questions, but I do think he needs to find a good foundation to stand on with his relationship. He needs to make him feel comfortable, and have a talk with him and his parents. Maybe in their home.
