Case: Student with recently divorced parents
How can I help one of my 4th grade students whose performance seems to be affected by his parents' recent divorce?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would find an online support group for young students that he can go to during recsess or before or after school. Where he can talk to like minded kids who are going through the same thing. I would also tell him that any questions he may have that I can answer I will. I would also have a conference with both parents perferably at the same time to talk about how we can help him together. |

Comments: While it is our place to nurture our students and provide an environment of communication, I do not believe that it is our right to provide counseling online for a student; this is overstepping our boundaries. The school guidance counselor should be made aware of the situation and speak with the student as this is within their educational background and training. Similarly, having conferences (I would suggest separate) with the parents but in a nonjudgmental way and simply explaining facts about their childs schooling and behavior is best. |

Comments: Although there are some useful bits to this suggestion, I don't think that sending the child to an online support group where there are unmonitored during school time is appropriate. It could create a whole new problem. |

Comments: For a fourth grade student, I don't think this solution is appropriate for his age. |
