  Case: Get my attention
I encountered a student during my time in the classroom who is constantly trying to get my attention and the attention of the teacher. I know that he could be a very good student but he does not use his time wisely and is sometimes disruptive when the other students are working. I think that he needs constant attention and, unfortunately, finds a negative way to do it most times. He also feels that he needs to be the class comedian. I tried not addressing his antics in the hopes that he would stop but it has continued for the entire three weeks. Most times when he is acting up a lot, the teacher is outside of the classroom but he will still be mildly disruptive even when she and I are both there. After asking him to quiet or settle down once or twice in a class he is usually pretty good. It would be my goal for him to be able to come into class and get to work without the usual 5 or 10 minutes of his antsy stand up comedy routine. Is there a good way to achieve this goal?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Students that want attention are all to prevalent in our classrooms today. I have used a couple of strategies that have helped with these students. One, I start complimenting by name and giving the attention to the ones that are on task and doing what I want them to do. It seems simple, but when others are getting the attention it really starts to make the ones wanting the attention to get on task so I will say their name out loud. Another way is to give out tickets to the ones that are on task and then do a drawing once a week for a prize or candy. Students normally get right on task for the chance at going to the "treasure box".

Comments: “If I were in this situation, I would exactly do this” In my opinion sometimes these students that want constant attention need goals and praise to help them feel like they are getting enough attention.

Comments: This solution involves the entire classroom community which is a great way to encourage good behavior versus bad behavior. I also by doing a drawing once a week every child is not expecting a treat every week. This will allow for all children to get on board with the everyday procedures of the classroom. With the children that need the attention it could be a great goal setter for them to earn tickets. The other students in the class are already setting the example, so child who needs attention should follow suit in my opinion.

Comments: This is a simple soulution but this does work. Give attention to those who are doing well and catch the student who is off task doing the right thing. Catch them being good and reward the desired behavior.

Comments: I like this solution because the kid wants the attention and the teacher are giving attention to those who are cooperatively working. Naturally, the student would do what is expected so they could get the teacher's attention.

Comments: I really like this solution and would definitely use it in my classroom. I do agree that students who like attention like to be called by name. This solution is great because you give attention to students for doing what they are supposed to do and this teaches them to stay on task.

Comments: I really like this solution. I agree students love to be praised for doing good. The more praise good behavior receives, the more students want to be acknowledged for it and strive to do good.

Comments: Rewarding is a great universal approach that seems to work at any age and is easy for the teacher to implement, very relevant to the case and is likely to solve the problem; all kids like rewards.

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would do exactly this. This solution would work because most attention seeking students will go for positive or negative attention. So if you ignore their seek for negative attention but encourage the positive attention they will focus more on receiving the positive reinforcements.

Comments: Simple but effective. If the student is not getting attention when he's acting out but then starts to get attention when he's focused and on task, that's going to make a big difference in his actions. I love the treasure box idea as well! Positive reinforcement is a great tool.
