  Case: Group Project
Mr. Phillips has assigned group projects to his science class. He notices that in one particular group one student does most of the work while the other students waste time. He tells the group that they should be sharing the workload. A few minutes after he talks to the students, they go back to the same set-up. How should he grade each student in the group?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Mr. Phillips should create a group work assignment chart. When the groups are established each member of the group chooses what portion of the assignment they will be handling. Each person then would be graded on the portion of the assignment they were assigned. A rubric for each section can be created so each student would know exactly what is expected of them. Part of the rubric should also include a peer to peer grade -let the members of the group evaluate what each one accomplished. This has made students independently responsible for their own work.

Comments: I do like this idea to solve the problem in Mr. Phillips classroom. However, I do feel that if students do not listen to their group members on what they feel comfortable doing, a student may end up completing part of the group work that he/she doesn't understand. Also, the other issue I have with this is that it may lead to individual work. Students should be working together to complete the assignment.

Comments: Great solution. Students in a group should be graded on the work that they were designated instead of relying on the other members to do the work. I also like the idea of having a peer evaluation, this will show the teacher the students that pulled their weight in the group.

Comments: This is a great idea and I would use it in my own classroom. I like the idea of assigning each person in a group a specific part of the assignment and providing a rubric for that part so that each student knows what is expected and knows they have to participate. I think the peer to peer grade would also be a good motivator for students to do their part because their group partners see what they are doing and if they are doing a good job. This way the teacher doesn't have to worry about watching each student but can use her class to help.

Comments: I completely agree with this solution. I think it is very important for students to be held accountable for a certain portion of the project and when presented also have the same responsibility to present the information. It is also helpful to have a peer rubric because that gives each individual in the group a chance to anonymously critique each group members effort without them knowing.

Comments: I feel that if the students pick the role or portion of the project they want to fill then they might feel more helpful or wanting to do a good job especially if they will be graded for their portion alone which might result in the group working together and the students actually participating.
