  Case: Extra Credit
Mona is very close to receiving an A on the content that has been covered in her art class this quarter. She approaches the teacher and proposes that she provide a sketch to show she has mastered the techniques presented during the quarter. Should the teacher give her the extra points?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Our goal as teachers is to ensure that our students comprehend and learn concepts. With that in mind, if Mona can prove that she has mastered the techniques she should get the extra points. BUT, it should be an option for the entire class. The environment of learning should be promoted to all students and extra credit needs to be offered to all students so you are not showing favoritism.

Comments: Extra credit can not be individualized. That is not fair. Offering extra credit - class wide - during the academic grading period is much more effective.

Comments: It is important to make the same extra credit opportunity to all students. There will be more than just one student in this situation and if the teacher feels it is fair to offer the opportunity to everyone it is okay, but a teacher cannot single out one student and help their grade because that is unfair to the rest of the class.

Comments: I agree with this statement because the students must have equal opportunities to give the entire class. The teachers must make sure they have understood the concepts and by providing an extra credit assignment it must be given to all students.

Comments: If extra credit is going to be an option, I would make sure that it was open to everyone who wished to improve their grade. If they're willing to go that extra mile because they may have made a slip during a test or an assignment, there's no reason to lord that over their heads.
