Home | How It Works | Stats Login | Register         Case: Throwing a punch Throughout class you notice that Chris and Keith are glaring at each other and making some snide comments, when they are within ear-shot of each other. As your class begins to exit the room, Chris and Keith end up next to each other. Keith shoves Chris, which results in Chris turning around and throwing a punch. Chris has caused many previous problems in your class all year – particularly with the other children. He usually responds fairly well to you, but has had previous displays of aggressive behavior. Keith has previous not caused any problems for you and typically is a very well-behaved young boy, just with a little more energy than others. What is next? Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!) First, it should not of escalated. When the issue was first identified, I would have called an administrator long before the problem occurred. After the first physical action is reciprocated, it no longer matters who is at fault or who started it... The students are fighting, and all Georgia schools have zero tolerance regarding this. The code of conduct should be followed as defined. If you don't stop behavior like this it will just get worst. Getting an administrator involved is good way to help solve the problem. This issue could of been solved better if the situation was stopped immediately. I feel administration should be called first thing a fight breaks out. I was not aware of an issue until I turned around and saw the two students punching each other or I would have definitely told the substitute to contact the office. I broke up the fight right away and stayed with one student while the sub stayed with the other student until administration arrived. I think, once it has turned into a fight in the school, it is hard to handle. This should be dealt with prior to the fight. I would talk to the students first and see what is going on and let them know their behavior is unacceptable. I agree that it needs to be handled, but the solution, does not match the exact situation.
