Case: Extra Credit
Mona is very close to receiving an A on the content that has been covered in her art class this quarter. She approaches the teacher and proposes that she provide a sketch to show she has mastered the techniques presented during the quarter. Should the teacher give her the extra points?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I as a teacher don't like giving extra credit unless I give all of my students that option. I would not give her the extra points and see how she preforms on the end of course test or assignment. If Mona has truly mastered the material she will show it on the end of course test or assignment. |

Comments: I agree with you about the extra credit. I do not give extra credit either. I have found that students who ask for extra credit usually are those students who do not consistently turn in regularly given assignments. Most students that complete all tasks usually end up with an A or B anyway. My policy would be that at the end of the course if a student who has completed all assigned work throughout the semester, makes an A on the end of course assessment and maybe just shy of an A, I will take that into consideration and have assigned an A which he or she deserves. |

Comments: I am going to have to disagree with this solution only because there are students who may not necessarily test that well. I have students who master at least 85 percent of the standards I teach; however, they fall below average on assessments. I think a little extra credit can be a boost of confidence more than just a means of getting a higher average. |

Comments: I think it would be unfair to allow Mona to try to get the A she so very much wants, you could offer the extra credit to the whole class if that would make it seem more fair to you. |
