Case: Lack of focus
I have a student that I work with in the classroom who will often be playing with some object that she has (and needs) such as a pencil and eraser. Or she will want to talk to me about something off topic (TV shows, animals, etc) while the teacher is instructing the class. I have tried telling her to listen because this is an important topic, and even tried saying "We can talk about this after we are done with the work and the teacher is done talking". However, it seems no matter what I do I cannot get her to pay attention. Any suggestions?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
The first thing I would try and do, is change up my lesson plan to make sure more questions are being asked and doing things that can help that student engaged. If that not working than maybe ADHD is of concern. |

Comments: providing more work for all the students because of one student may not be the best option because they will all feel like they are being punished. |

Comments: If there is no issue with the other students being bored or distracted, the lesson plan may be fine. That should not be the first option. Checking to see if this is happening in her other classes should be the first step. |

Comments: I don't think that should be the first thing you do. Changing up the lesson plan for a student before finding out if it is a learning/behavior disability may hinder the chances of actually figuring out if there is a problem. I think the first step should be to talk her parents about possibly having her evaluated for ADD or ADHD. |

Comments: Teachers shouldn't feel the need to change their lesson plan so frequently. I would study the student more in depth to see what the real problem is. |

Comments: Changing the lesson plan to cater to one student is not helpful because you will lose the other students in the process. |

Comments: This is a poor solution because you shouldn't change your lesson plan for these specific reasons. |
