  Case: Won't Do Anything!
I am dealing with a situation in my class where one of my students just sits at his desk all day and does absolutely nothing. It does not matter what I say or do. He just sits there and will not even pick up his pencil. What makes this situation worse is that I know he can do it and I know he is capable of great things! When I tested him at the beginning of the year he scored above average. What are some things I can do to help this situation? I have motivated and been as positive about this as I can. I have even made the parents aware and they keep saying her is like that at home as well.
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Maybe speak with her about topics that interest her and have just a real conversation. See if she will talk with you about that. Then you can try to incorporate things of interest into her learning. I know it will be more work, but if it gets her doing something that's all you want.

The suggested solution is relevant to the case Yes
The suggested solution is reasonable (easy) for the teacher to implement Yes
The suggested solution is likely to solve the problem/issue Yes
The suggested solution is original Yes
Comments: I love the idea of getting to know the student on a personal level. This is important for teachers to do with every student but especially those that don't show interest in what you're already attempting to teach and incorporate.

Comments: I agree that talking to the student to see what her interest are may engage her more in the classroom. I think I would set up a meeting with the guidance counselor as well.

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would do exactly this. If she tested above average, she may be bored with lessons. It could be that they are too easy so they are not holding her attention or simply that she is not interested in those topics. So speaking with her about what she is interested in is a great idea. You could then try to implement those topics of interest into your lesson plans.

Comments: This would be a great way to ignite the interest a little! If the child is extremely capable, the curriculum may be boring on its own. Spice it up a little!

Comments: I agree, incorporating a student's interests in the material can really help motivate them and promote learning. In addition, it can also help the teacher find out more about the student and possibly find out the source of the student's lack of motivation to do the work.
