  Case: Bathroom
I am on Block schedule, which requires students to be in my classroom for 90 minutes. That is a long time especially in the morning and right after lunch. Last year, halfway through the class, I allowed students to use the restroom and gave a 5 minute break. This was also good for their mind. It worked great. It didn't interfere with any other classes, my teachings or learning. However, at the end of last year, my department head asked me why and said I probably shouldn't do that. However, she couldn't give me a reason why. I tried to explain to her, it helps control my classroom management. I haven't done it this year and struggle throughout the lesson, because I continue to have students ask me to use the restroom. Should I go back to what I did last year?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Typically, I think of giving breaks to students to be a practice done in elementary school. However, i can see the real benefit in giving high school students this break also because of the amount of material a teacher has to go through in one class period. I feel that this practice would work depending on the personality of the students. I have had behavioral problems in my classroom before and the only way they would improve is if I kept them constantly busy.

Comments: I think that students at any age should get breaks, especially during long classes. For elementary aged students or college students, a short 5 minute break can make all the difference and isn't going to waste time because it's going to prevent burn out and distractions throughout the remainder of the class.

Comments: It is hard to judge when you do not have support from your administration, but I am a firm beleiver that a teacher knows their students best and if you feel bathroom breaks make the class run smoother I say go for it!

Comments: Most high school students are capable of staying quiet and focused for a 90 minute lesson but not all high school students can. I myself suffer from ADHD and the thought of having to sit through a 90 minute lessons gives me anxiety. There may be students in a classroom that need that break and it would be a good idea to be willing to accommodate to them.

Comments: Exactly, that is what we are doing with our students. Just keeping them busy. If they are sitting for that long doing busy work they are not learning.

Comments: If the strategy worked before, it does not matter what age group the students are. The strategy should be used if it helps solve the problem.

Comments: I think that this would cause more issues in the classroom. Student's need to give their minds a break and when they don't feel so restricted, they do better.
