Case: Translator Issues
Mrs. Benson is a fourth grade teacher who has several students whose parents do not speak English. She has tried several times to contact the translator to help in meeting with these parents to discuss their child's grades. The translator will not communicate with the teacher regarding the students. What can she do to help keep communication flowing from school to home for these Hispanic parents?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Mrs. Benson can send a letter home in spanish asking if there is someone available to attend the meeting that speaks english. She can also find a app that allows her to type in english but translates the message in spanish. By doing this, she may be able to send a folder home with the information regarding the meeting. I would also go to the school translator and to discuss the urgency of speaking with the parents. If this fails, you may need to get someone from administration involved. |

Comments: I think sending the letter home in Spanish is a good idea. Many parents get frustrated if they fell that school personnel is not working with them for their child's success. |

Comments: I thought this solution was the best, but if it was me I would go straight to notifying the administrator if the parents were not able to bring someone who is bilingual with them. |

Comments: This is a great idea and a great place to start. I love the idea of sending home a letter in Spanish asking for a friend or relative who speaks English to join the parents at the meeting. The app also sounds like it would be really helpful with effective communication between the parents and teacher. I agree that informing the translator of the urgency of speaking with the parents is key, and that if this fails the best step is to go to administration for help. |

Comments: I like this solution however the teacher should definitely double check her translations from the app or else risk offending the parents. |
