  Case: Withdrawn
In Mrs. Gregory's class there is a little girl who cries about everything. She cries about getting on the computer, fire drills, going to the bus after school, going to specials, everything. In addition to this, she talks to no one, and at recess she does not even go out to the playground. She just sits on the pavement. Mrs. Gregory has asked her about this and she says she is scared. She withdraws herself from the class. What are some ways that the teacher can help this student with improving social skills and maybe getting more comfortable around her peers and in certain situations?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Perhaps Mrs. Gregory could pick a student in the class that has good social skills and gets along well with other to pair the two up together for activities. Mrs. Gregory could have a conversation with student who has good social skills to tell this student to try and help the unsociable student open up. The teacher also needs to keep documentation of these behaviors in case the student needs to be tested for emotional disorders. The parents of this emotional student should needs contacted about their behavior.

Comments: This is a great tactic for trying to incorporate a shy child into the classroom. The child is obviously hesitent when it comes to big group setttings and by easing her into the social aspect of the classroom with partner assignments can ease a lot of her anxiety.

Comments: I think it's a good idea to pair this student up with someone that she can get to know and feel comfortable with, but this should not be the only socialization she experiences. I would also contact the parents and keep documentation of the behaviors if I was in this situation.

Comments: I agree with this solution and think it would be effective. This would be a gentle way to help the student to open up and feel more comfortable, and the social student might be able to figure out what the problem is. I think contacting the student's parent would be necessary as well.

Comments: I am not comfortable with this solution. Choosing another student and contacting parents may be part of a better solution, but not the key. I wonder why a referral to the the school counselor is not part of the solution.

Comments: I agree with this solution and think that the child may have some deeper issues that a counselor could help out with during the school day.

Comments: I think documentation is helpful but it doesn't sound like having a buddy is really what this child needs.

Comments: I think pairing her up with another student may make them feel uncomfortable. I think there alternative ways to go about this, but I do think contacting the parents would be beneficial.

Comments: I like this solution a lot. Giving the student a supporting peer will make them feel encouraged and help redirect them.
