He is overwhelmed by long reading passages, because he cannot read on grade level. Bobby needs to learn about main idea and supporting details. The teacher provides Bobby a story on his reading level. Bobby only has to identify the main idea while the rest of the class must identify the main idea and supporting details. Are there other ways to address this student's need? How? Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!) If Bobby is overwhelmed by long reading passages, you can allow him to work in steps. First getting him to find the main idea in the sentence or couple of sentences. Then allowing him to find the main idea in the paragraph. Next, he will need to find the main idea on the page. Finally, he will find the main idea to the passage. By breaking the passage into chunks, it will hopefully reduce his feeling of being overwhelmed.
