  Case: Parent Enjoys Projects
During a regular parent conference, the parent was informed about an up-coming science project. The parent was very excited and shared that she liked doing projects. She enjoyed using her creativity and cute ideas. I want parents to support their students by assisting with materials and guidance not completing the student's work. After all, it is not fair to the student who does not get any help at all or has limited resources. What suggestions do you have for limiting the parent's hands-on participation, yet welcoming their support otherwise?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
Perhaps sending a letter home with the project explaining the concern you have of parents doing their students' work. Make the students bring back a signature from the parents that they understand what is being asked of them. If the parent truly cares about the learning development of their child, they should comply and be a supportive, not do all the work for them. However, the reality is that we can not be with the student all the time and whatever happens at home is out of our control.

The suggested solution is respectful of the individual (student) Yes
The suggested solution is relevant to the case No
The suggested solution is reasonable (easy) for the teacher to implement Yes
The suggested solution is likely to solve the problem/issue No
The suggested solution is original No
Comments: While this strategy would be useful for expressing concern to the parents of all students, the case is discussing a parent during a parent conference. I took this as needing a solution that a teacher can do face to face with the specific parent. Perhaps laying out guidelines for how to help the child without doing the work for them just like one would in the classroom.

Comments: I do not think this will be helpful, as I'm sure the parent is already away that the student SHOUlD be completing the work.

Comments: I think this will piss off parents. Sending home a guideline of what is expected out of the project is resonable. You will not b able to keep a parent for helping or not helping.

Comments: I don't really think a letter is necessary. The parent should already know that they're not supposed to be doing their child's project and a signature won't stop them.

Comments: I would never do this. This is something the teacher could try but I don't believe this will fix the problem. If the parent is going to do the project for the student, they can still do it whether or not they sign off on the letter. The teacher would still not know who was actually completing the assignment.

Comments: This is a great idea, it is allowing the parents to know up front that you expect to see normal student work not anything that looks as though the parents did it. Having them sign it makes sure that most of them really read it.

Comments: I would never do this! This is wrong! Setting up a scenario where you the teacher believe the outcome is out of your control is not a very good approach to take.

Comments: I feel that a letter so straightforward may seem confrontational to parents. Also, saying that what happens at home is out of teacher control may be true, but that does not mean that we cannot do all we can to help our students in and out of school.

Comments: The parents may not all be involved, so calling all of them out isn't a good idea. Even if the parents sign the form, it usually is just to appease the teacher, granted most probably won't do it all anyway because they want their child to create it, however there are a few that may not care either way and still do it. Maybe allow time in class for work to be completed so you know that the students are doing some of it.
