Case: Shy student
Joyce is not making much progress teaching her remedial English class and is particularly concerned about an extremely shy student who is not responding to her teaching methods and style.
What would you do to help her shy student?

The teacher could give an interest inventory. Once the student has completed it, the teacher could find common ground and interests with the student. This might help the student open up to the teacher. I think a relationship must be built before the student will start responding to the teacher. Through the interest inventory the teacher can find out what the student's learning style is as well. |

I think it is important for the student to feel that the teacher is reaching out trying to find common interests to use as a gateway to opening up. Along with the shy student, I think the interest inventory could be used on all the students. Then, if this shy student and a couple other students have some similarities that will give her as well as the other students to work together. |

Not all students are comfortable with verbally or physically participating in class so knowing what their learning style is like will help with how the teacher can run the class. Not all shy students stay that way and their introverted personality should not make them fail, especially if they do understand the material, because the way the class is run. Students can grow out of this as well. I used to be a shy student, but I ended up growing out of that phase as I got older. |
